Dear people entrusted with the priceless Minnesota Orchestra,
In this most difficult management environment, I would like to join people around the world in assuring you that the eyes of the world are indeed on the Minnesota Orchestra, and on your actions tomorrow. In a few short weeks, the orchestra will either be destroyed, its director to some new high-profile position, its musicians to be scattered among top orchestras, its audience embittered – or it will be saved, by your goodwill, by the goodwill of Senator Mitchell, by the goodwill of the musicians, and all who love what this orchestra has become.
So I plead with you to take the middle road proposed by Senator Mitchell. By so many metrics, Minnesota has been seen to punch above its weight in building and supporting a world-renowned orchestra, and they will once again answer the call that must be made to retain this jewel of America’s musical heritage. Vision drives giving, as you know.
May your vision tomorrow well represent the history and potential of this priceless institution.
